Coronavirus

People, and especially adults with Down’s syndrome have a higher risk of serious illness and hospitalisation when they get Covid 19. This means that they are identified as being “clinically extremely vulnerable”. The risk of serious outcomes increases with age and when a person has other conditions.

However, the positive news is that there is evidence that full vaccination offers good protection from serious illness and people with Down’s Syndrome over the age of 12 are eligible for antibody and antiviral treatments on the NHS if they test positive for coronavirus. You may also be eligible for free home testing kits and it is a good idea to have lateral flow tests at home in case your family member with Down’s Syndrome has suspected covid.
